James Arthur is so much more than an X factor winner. He’s had two number one singles, 7 top ten singles and recently achieved his second number one album. The song that launched his career after winning the X Factor in 2012, “Impossible”, sold 2.5 million copies worldwide and over 1 million in the UK. After being dropped by his label he came back in style with “Say you won’t let go”, which was number one all over the world, has hit over 2 billion streams as well as over 2.5 million sales in the UK alone. He is currently one of the most streamed solo artists in the world and is in the middle of a world tour which saw him sell out arenas across the UK, Europe and US. On stage he has been heralded as having “unparalleled charisma, impressive vocal ability and captivating stage presence.” (Riff Magazine)

30) Maybe
Don’t be scared, I am too
‘Cause this chemistry between me and you
Is too much to just ignore it
So I’ll admit it now, I’m falling
So maybe
Maybe we were always meant to meet
Like this was all our destiny
Like you already know
Your heart will never be broken by me.

“Maybe”, an album track from 2019’s You, is a love song written to someone with whom James Arthur hopes and fears that despite all odds, he might spend the rest of his life together. Delivered in James Arthur’s usual raw emotion and vulnerability, this is a great song!
29) Comeback Kid
We’re running through the streets, darling, where we going?
You got me on that summer wine and blues, smoking by the tides
It’s a rush whenever you’re lying next to me
The kind of love that comes around in a century
Yeah, I just wanna feel you till the end of time
No, I, I can’t live without you
I’m trying, I’m trying
But I, I can’t live without you
Just tell me you feel the way I do

Album – Bitter Sweet Love

“Comeback Kid”, on 2024’s number 1 album Bitter Sweet Love has featured on that set list of James Arthur’s current sellout world tour. James himself became known by the media as the comeback kid, but for him this song is a love song, “giving the credit to that other person and saying that, if anyone should take credit for the fact that I managed to bounce back, it’s you. And that just felt like a very lovely and sincere thing to say.”
28) Lasting Lover (with Sigala)
I don’t wanna let go, let go
‘Cause I’ve been tryna hold on for so long
I feel like I’m lost without a trace
Take my heart and run away
She said, “I’ve been looking for a lasting lover”
Save me, save me
From every single heartache, heartache
I feel like I’m lost without a trace
Take my heart and run away
She said, “I’ve been looking for a lasting lover”

UK Chart – 20
Spotify – 294.2m streams
YouTube – 34m views
A dance pop collaboration with Sigala, “Lasting Lover” hit the top 20 in the UK in 2020. A great hook with James Arthur’s usual impassioned lyrics. His acoustic version of this song is pretty special too!
27) Rewrite the Stars (with Anne-Marie)
What if we rewrite the stars?
Say you were made to be mine
Nothin’ could keep us apart
You’d be the one I was meant to find
It’s up to you and it’s up to me
No one can say what we get to be
So why don’t we rewrite the stars?
Maybe the world could be ours tonight

UK Chart = 7
Spotify – 823.8m streams
YouTube – 582.2m views
This duet with Anne-Marie of the Greatest Showman song was released in 2018 as part of the Greatest Showman: ReImagined album. It won James Arthur universal acclaim, and is one of his most popular streamed songs, although it ranks relatively low among his fans.
26) Safe Inside
If you make the same mistakes
I will love you in either way
All I know is that I can’t live without you
There is nothing I can say
That will change you in any way
Darling, I could never live without you
I can’t live.
Will you call me to tell me you’re alright
Cause I’ll worry about you the whole night
Don’t make my mistakes
I won’t sleep ’til you’re safe inside

Album – Back From The Edge
UK Chart – 31
Spotify – 149.2m streams
YouTube – 47.2m views
“Safe inside”, the second single to be released from Back from the Edge, reaching 31 in 2017, was his fifth top 40 single. “Safe Inside” was written for his sister, for whom he had become a father figure. “It got me thinking what it must be like to be a parent and see someone you gave birth to grow up and leave the nest and stuff like that. I guess I just wanted to tap into that. Those feelings. Those emotions. That’s basically the essence of the song.”
25) Back from the Edge
You can take my home, you can take my clothes
You can take the drugs I have that nobody knows
You can take my watch, you can take my phone
You can take all I’ve got ’til I’m skin and bone
I don’t want control, I can dig my own hole
I can make my bed and I can lie in it cold

Album – Back From the Edge
Spotify – 46.1m streams
YouTube – 1.6m views
“Back from the Edge”, the title track that opens James Arthur’s second album released in 2016, is a song of defiance that “just lets people know where I’ve been, what I’ve been doing and ultimately I’m back and I’m better than ever and I think its the perfect way to open the album.”
24) A Year Ago
Singing by the kitchen sink
I miss you
Not knowing I was listening
I miss you, babe
You embody everything that I am not
And, now, I’m just somebody you forgot
I wish it was a year ago
I wish that I could hold you close
Now I’m driving past your house, I know
The lights are on, you’re not alone
I wonder if you’re making eyes
I wonder if he loves you like
The way you said that only I could do

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
UK Chart – 91
Spotify – 106.6m streams
YouTube – 9.4m views
“A Year Ago” was the first single released from Bitter Sweet Love in 2023, and gave fans a sign that having experimented with his sound on It’ll All Make Sense In The End, he was back to his raw authentic best. It must have worked as no fewer than 10 tracks from this album have made it onto this Top 30 list. As he told Apple Music, “I really felt this one deep down. There’s nothing more heart-wrenching than that feeling of ‘I thought you couldn’t love anybody more than me, and here I am having to look at you moving on! I’m singing about some really authentic stuff that l’d actually felt before.”
23) Sermon
I need you to feel that you’re more than enough
I already know you’re deserving of love
There’s not a question that you are the one that I need
These are my words
This is my voice
That is my sermon
Give me your heart
Give me your pain
Give me your burden
‘Cause I can take anything that you can give
Forgiving everything that you did
These are my words
This is my voice
That is my sermon

Album – Back From The Edge
Spotify – 30.6m streams
YouTube – 11.5m views
Another track from 2016’s Back From The Edge, “Sermon” is a collaboration with featuring British rapper Shotty Horroh. It is a bold declaration from James Arthur – it outlines who he is and where he is going – and he is not going to apologise for this. Another song that featured on the Bitter Sweet Love World Tour where he encouraged fans to join in and he showed off his own rapping skills.
22) Ruthless
We were growing like an orchid
And I tried to be all you wanted
The flowers that we watered, you ripped them out
Oh my God, you’re ruthless, I was foolish, I was wrong
Now I’m crying, I don’t do this, and it’s useless
Now you’re gone, now that you’re gone
Did you mean every word that you said?
‘Cause they burn right through me, right through
Like you did, oh my God, you’re ruthless

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 1.6m streams
YouTube – 151k views
“Ruthless” is one of the rockier tracks from 2024’s Bitter Sweet Love, all about the experience of being ghosted. Here James Arthur plays “the character of a guy who’s disgruntled and bitter about what’s happened to him.” Clearly this is another track that resonates with James Arthur’s fans as it’s 22 in our top song countdown.
21) Last of the Whiskey
You got those beautiful eyes
And I just wanna be lost
It’s been one hell of a ride
And I don’t wanna get off, oh, no, no
That was the last of the whiskey
That was thе sweet summer wine
That was the last way you kissеd me
I think about it all the time
One more night in the city
One more night to let it go
One more time bein’ petty
But that was the last of the whiskey
That was the last you were with me

Album – It’ll All Make Sense In The End
Spotify – 6m streams

“Last of the Whiskey”, from It’ll All Make Sense In The End is almost wistful in its mood as James Arthur reminisces about the last wild night with someone.
20 – 11
20) Is it Alright?
Feels like two minutes ago, it was you and me against the world
Now it feels like my whole world is ending
Is it alright if I lay with you just one more night?
Let’s evade the truth
And go back to the first time that we both felt the same
And we were just falling like tears in the rain
Is it okay if we play pretend
Just for one day or one more night?
Is that alright?
‘Cause I’m not doin’ so well

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 1.8m streams
YouTube – 282k views
“Is It Alright?” Is a beautiful ballad from Bitter Sweet Love with James Arthur’s vocals at their vulnerable best. As he says, “It’s about meeting up with someone who maybe you haven’t seen for a while and you know it’s over, but you want to pretend that it’s not for one night.”
19) Falling Like the Stars
I swear to God, I can see
Four kids and no sleep
We’ll have one on each knee, you and me, hmm
And when they’ve grown up
You’re still the girl in the club
When I held your hair up, ’cause you had too much
And I need you to know that we’re
Fallin’ so fast, we’re fallin’ like the stars, fallin’ in love

Album – You
UK Chart – 25
Spotify – 517.6m streams
YouTube – 121.6m views
“Falling like the Stars” was the third single released from You. It is a love song, pure and simple, expressing perhaps rare contentment and the wonder of a love that might last forever. On the UK leg of the Bitter Sweet Love world tour James Arthur performed this with Dean Lewis, his Australian support act.
18) Emily
I needed life and life came and gave me Emily
Will I be good enough for you?
The truth is I’m afraid of everyone and anything that could hurt you
Oh, Emily
If you ever feel lonely, just sit next to me
Since we brought you home with us, you’re everything
‘Cause you make me a better man than I’ll ever be, ever be, ever be
Because of you, Emily, yeah

Album – It’ll All Make Sense in the End
UK chart – 82
Spotify – 46.7m streams
YouTube – 11.7m views
“Emily” was the fourth single released from It’ll Make Sense in the End. It’s a song written to his future daughter (James Arthur has since become a dad to a girl named Emily) , where James expresses his longing to be a good dad but his anxiety when his daughter found out about some of the things he got up to in his past. At its heart is a message of hope as he realises that becoming a dad has made him “a better person than I’ll ever be” as he has someone else to live for.
17) New Generation
Suicide rates are higher
Everybody’s going viral
Picture-perfect, in denial
It’s the new coronavirus
I guess we never saw the warning signs
Politicians telling lies
Politicians sniffin’ lines
Pick a side, you left or right?
What a way to start a riot
Oh, with a little bit of you
And a little bit of me
I feel a new sensation
Lеt’s start a new generation

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 1m streams
YouTube – 66k views
“New Generation” appears on 2024’s Bitter Sweet Love and also as part of the encore of James Arthur’s current world tour. It stands out from the other songs on the album as it is politicial in theme and rocky in its sound. James lets loose, expressing his anger at the way there is so much division in the world. He calls for a new generation to rise up to undo the mess that this world finds itself in. Clearly, as it’s in our top 20 James is not alone!
16) Car’s Outside
You say I’m always leavin’
You, when you need me the most, but darling
But the car’s outside
But I don’t wanna go tonight
I’m not gettin’ in the Addison Lee
Unless you pack your bags
You’re comin’ with me
I’m tired of lovin’ from afar
And never being where you are
Close the windows, lock the doors
Don’t wanna leave you anymore

Album – You
UK Chart – 78
Spotify – 699m streams
YouTube – 45m views
“Car’s Outside” is a soaring ballad from 2019 album You. In the song James Arthur is always leaving home, with taxi cabs waiting to take him away (The Addison Lee of the chorus refers to a black taxi firm), but this time he is determined not to leave unless his love leaves with him. Fans really connect with the song and it was a hit on his recent world tour.
15) Blindside
Just like a bolt from the blue
No one’s ever hit me harder than you
Now it’s all residue
You’re just a memory I wake up to
‘Cause you caught me on my blindside
Right place at the wrong time
And I don’t wanna love the ghost of you
‘Cause you caught me on my blindside
You were once in a lifetime
Why do we love the ones that we lose?
I’m haunted by the ghost of you

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 17.2m streams
YouTube – 4.8m views
“Blindside” was the second single released from Bitter Sweet Love and featured as the second song on his Bitter Sweet Love world tour. It’s got a rocky, Springsteen vibe. Here James Arthur “unpacks some past trauma. It’s about falling in love at the wrong time.”
14) Just Us
It’s a shock to the heart
We get lost in the dark, but
Unconditional love is a light that never fades
And I know the life I’ve been chasing
Is a waste of time
And I don’t wanna say it
But I’ve been out of control
And I’m ready to face it
Baby, once and for all
I’m so tired of running
I’m sick of letting you down
It’s been a lonely road, but it’s all over now
It’s just us from here on

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 21.2m streams
YouTube – 3.4m views
“Just Us” from Bitter Sweet Love is another song inspired by being a dad, and the change of perspective that parenthood has brought. “Having a child really changed my perspective on life. I never really had an anchor, and having [my daughter] was inspiring. It made me think about how really none of the things I’ve been doing up until this point matter.”
13) A Thousand Years
I have died evеry night waiting for you
Darling, don’t be afraid
I have loved you for a thousand yеars
I’ll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I’ll love you for a thousand more

Spotify – 127.3m streams
YouTube – 25m views
“A Thousand Years” an acoustic cover of the Christina Perri hit is a perfect song for James Arthur to showcase his vocals. He put out the recording on Valentines Day 2023, and fans loved it so much it was released as a digital download a month later. It’s a staple of his live shows and audiences love to join in with him belting out this song.
12) Certain Things
There’s something about you
It’s when you get angry
You have me at your mercy
And you’re like a shoulder to turn to
Cause certain things burn
Just when we’re hanging on for dear life
We held on so tight
And you keep coming back again
Keep running round my head
And there’s certain things that I adore
And there’s certain things that I ignore
But I’m certain that I’m yours.

Album – James Arthur
Spotify – 127.3m streams
YouTube – 25m views
“Certain Things”, a collaboration with Chasing Grace is from his eponymous debut album. A chilled out love song, perfect for those long summer evenings. In the recent tour James sang this as part of a medley with Safe Inside, Quite Miss Home, and Emily.
11) Naked
I’m not gonna wait until you’re done
Pretending you don’t need anyone
I’m standing here naked (Naked, naked)
I’m not gonna try ’til you decide
You’re ready to swallow all your pride
I’m standing here naked (Naked, naked)

Album – You
UK Chart – 11
Spotify – 734.5m streams
YouTube – 308.8m views
“Naked” was the lead single from James Arthur’s third album, You, released in November 2017 and hit the top 20 of the singles chart. A ballad, that is just as popular with fans as when it was first released. A staple of his live shows, this was a great hit with fans on the Bitter Sweet Love World Tour.
10 – 1
10) Say You Won’t Let Go
I’m so in love with you and I hope you know
Darlin’, your love is more than worth its weight in gold
We’ve come so far, my dear, look how we’ve grown
And I wanna stay with you until we’re grey and old
Just say you won’t let go

Album – Back From The Edge
UK Chart – 1
Spotify – 2.81bn streams
YouTube – 1.67bn views
“Say you won’t let go” was the lead single from Back from the Edge, written originally as a love song because James Arthur’s record label felt there weren’t enough love songs on the album. James Arthur told lyrics site Genius, “The inspiration was to look at someone’s life and the path through it with a partner. Some of it is personal and some of it is inspired by people around me as well as imagining what life is like in other people’s relationships.” Little did he know how big it would become – it was a massive hit all over the world – including number 1 in the UK (and 19 on the year end chart for 2016) and 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 (8 on 2017 year end chart). It was number 23 on the UK decade chart 2010-2019 and sold 3 million copies in the UK and 11 million copies in the US. When it passed the 1 million mark in January 2017 James Arthur became the first X factor winner to sell over 1 million copies of 2 songs in their homeland. At the time of writing it is 16 on Spotify’s list of most streamed songs of all-time, having passed the 1 billion stream mark in January 2019 and 2 billion stre. Perhaps the only surprise is that it isn’t higher on our fan poll list!
9) Empty Space
I’m alone in my head
Looking for love in a stranger’s bed
But I don’t think I’ll find it
‘Cause only you could fill this empty space
I wanna tell all my friends
But I don’t think they would understand
It’s somethin’ I’ve decided
‘Cause only you could fill this empty space.

Album – You
UK Chart – 22
Spotify – 297.2m streams
YouTube – 61.5m views
“Empty space” This song is for anyone who has ever deeply loved and lost someone dear to them, and is then faced with the struggle of trying to fill that void. It is about coming to terms with the fact that only that special person can truly fill the empty space.”2
8) Free Falling
Maybe I’m free-falling
Maybe I’m out of time
Tell me I’m worth somеthing
Maybe they’re right about mе
Maybe I’ve lost my mind
Only you give me the wings to fly
Why don’t you save me from myself tonight?

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 8.8m streams
YouTube – 1.9m views
James Arthur has a gift for singing about heartache – his rawness and vulnerability as well as his power is what makes him such a compelling singer-songwriter. “Free falling” is the perfect example of this. James Arthur says of this song, “I imagined this story of a guy who is watching the world go by and is very jealous of people’s happiness. He wants validation. That fed a lot into my story, where I feel like I’m on the outside looking in and I’m not being recognised.” Well, with songs like this, surely James will get the recognition he deserves.
7) Bitter Sweet Love
I could eulogise
About the way look in the red light, you’re a killer (You’re a killer)
Yeah, it’s a thriller, babe (It’s a thriller)
Tell me why, tell me why
Do you feel the need to run me through the wringer
When I’m hook, line, and sinker, babe
So deep
It’s in my veins, I feel the pain
So, please
Don’t play those games, don’t play with me
I need just a bit of sweet love
Not your bittersweet love

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 8.8m streams
YouTube – 1m views
“Bitter Sweet Love” is the title track and opener for 2024’s chart topping album. It’s gutsy and punchy and serves as a statement of intent, that James Arthur is back and as good as ever. Of this song, James Arthur says, “It was clear that I wanted to talk about love and heartbreak. Of course, if it’s really love, it ain’t going to be plain sailing. I thought it was a cute thing to do to ask if we just have that sweet love all the time.” It was the perfect track to begin his live tour, the pyrotechnics on display matching the power of the song. Fans love it and it sits comfortably in our top 10.
6) Can I be him?
I swear that every word you sing
You wrote them for me
Like it was a private show
But I know you never saw me
When the lights come on and I’m on my own
Will you be there to sing it again?
Could I be the one you talk about in all your stories?
Can I be him?

Album – Back From The Edge
UK Chart – 69
Spotify – 790m streams
YouTube – 240m views
Can I be him, the third single from “Back from the Edge” is all about unrequited love, written at a time when James Arthur knew he wasn’t ready to receive love or be in a relationship, but saw a girl he liked and wondered – could he be the one for her after all? Live, this song is extraordinary – a highlight of his live shows.
5) Impossible
Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the rooftops
Write it on the skyline
All we had is gone now
Tell them I was happy
And my heart is broken
All my scars are open
Tell them what I hoped would be
Impossible

Album – James Arthur
UK Chart – 1
Spotify – 839m streams
YouTube – 378.3m views
Although the 29 other tracks on this list show he is so much more, “Impossible” is possibly the song that James Arthur will always be known for. Originally recorded in 2010 by Shontelle it was chosen as the X Factor winner’s single for 2012. Upon release it sold over 490,000 copies in its first week, going straight to number 1 and finishing number 5 in the year-end charts for 2012 Having sold over 2 million copies, it’s now the biggest-selling X Factor winner’s single. The track showcases James Arthur’s guts and passion and its appeal ensures – it is still a staple of his live show, closing out his main set of his Bitter Sweet Love world tour.
4) Quite Miss Home
I quite miss home
And I miss you telling me to leave my shoes at the door
‘Cause you just swept the floor and the dirt drives you crazy
Yeah, I quite miss home
‘Cause it feels like poetry
And the rain falls down on the window
While you’re in my arms and we’re watching the TV
Yeah, I quite miss home

Album – You
UK Chart – 77
Spotify – 118.5m streams
YouTube – 42.3m views

In the song, he is looking back on his memories of a life with a family member or former lover with whom he is parted, expressing how much he misses the small and even mundane parts of their life together . Its emotional depth clearly has struck a chord with fans who voted it their 4th favourite song.
3) From the Jump
Take me back to the summer breeze
We were sleeping out by the willow trees
It was the first time you laid your head on my chest
Was a night I will never forget
That’s when I told you on a Friday night
You’re always gonna have this heart of mine
Wherever we go, whatever we do
I just wanna spend forever with you.

Album – Bitter Sweet Love
Spotify – 2.36m streams
YouTube – 600k views
James Arthur describes “From the Jump” as one of his favourite songs from Bitter Sweet Love – it has a country vibe and he imagined it as being one that people might walk down the aisle to. Indeed, during his recent tour through the UK couples proposed to each other on stage while he was performing it. A recent release of a duet version with Kelly Clarkson seems set to give this song, already a fan favourite, greater prominence.
2) Recovery
Look at all the hate they keep on showing
I don’t want to see that
Look at all the stones they keep on throwing
I don’t want to feel that
Like Sun that will keep on burning
I used to be so discerning, oh
In my recovery
I’m a soldier at war
I have broken down walls
I defined, I designed,
My recovery

Album – James Arthur
UK Charts – 19
Spotify – 42.8m streams
YouTube – 79.1m views
“Recovery” from his debut album is on a similar vein, about his battle against addiction – he is focusing on the fight ahead of him, refusing to give up. It’s a message of hope for anyone who is fighting their own personal battles.
1) Train Wreck
I don’t wanna lose it
But I’m not getting through this
Hey, should I pray
Should I pray, yeah, to myself
To a God? To a saviour who can
Unbreak the broken
Unsay these spoken words
Find hope in the hopeless
Pull me out the train wreck
Unburn the ashes
Unchain the reactions now
I’m not ready to die, not yet
Pull me out the train wreck

Album – Back from the Edge
UK Chart – 16
Spotify – 807.9m streams
YouTube – 275m views
A song of passion and urgency, “Train Wreck” was written and sung from the very depths of James Arthur’s soul. Released on Back from the Edge, it wasn’t until an acoustic performance went viral on TikTok that “Train Wreck” made its impact on the charts – and deservedly so. If you want to capture what James Arthur is about in one song, it would be this one – full of pure emotion and raw honesty, of darkness but also hope. James Arthur himself said, “Train wreck means a lot to me … I was in the worst place I’ve ever been in my personal life and my career. I was writing music about redemption, I was trying to pull myself out of a dark place and get back to where I wanted to be. It felt like my dreams were over. The song is for anyone who has felt that way, who’s ever felt like they’ve lost sight of their dreams or they’ve lost someone or something and not to give up hope. There’s always a thread of hope. I hope that’s felt in the song and the lyric and ultimately that’s what it’s all about.” James Arthur’s fans have taken this song to their heart above all, many speaking about how it helped them deal with very dark times. A deserved number one song!
