2020 – this was the year

2020 this was the year
Of pandemic and full of fear
COVID. Lockdown. Death. Infections
R rates. Line graphs. Bad projections.
Stay home, Save lives, and keep your space.
Please Wash your hands and mask your face.
No hugs or touch with friend or stranger
Please, please don’t put them in danger.
A sickness that infects us all
Presidents Prime Ministers in its thrall
2020 this was the year
Of pandemic and full of fear

2020 - brutality
By police marred our humanity.
Breonna Taylor and George Floyd
two of too many in this void
Of injustice and I can’t breathe
Crying out protestors seethe
Black Lives Matter if all lives matter
Will this ever get any better?
When some in power fan the flame
Of hate and violence, deflecting blame
2020 - brutality
By police marred our humanity.

2020 - was it all bad?
A nightmare that we wished we’d not had?
Beyond saving, fit for the bin
Or in darkness can light shine in?
If we stop and look we might see
The best of our humanity.
Selfless workers whose sacrifice
Deserved applause that didn’t suffice
To express a nation’s gratitude
On those Thursdays at least they knew.
2020 - was it all bad?
A nightmare that we wished we’d not had?

2020 the light shines on
Stubborn hope refused to be gone
Neighbours connected for the first time
Phone calls, visits, simply being kind
We came together through technology
Connecting as one humanity
Places of worship Shut their doors
Communities of faith just did more
Worship and care for stranger or friend
Loving through giving a hand to lend
2020 the light shone on
Stubborn hope refused to be gone.

2020, well, what a year.
Our memories won’t disappear.
The darkness has been strong and yet
The light is stronger, don’t forget.
It won’t and can’t be overcome
Though in a battle hope has won
For empowering it in love
Is one whose good gifts from above
Give strength, love, peace, hope and beauty.
The gift of life for eternity.
2020, well what a year
Hope and light won’t disappear.
