The feeding of the 5,000 – a retelling

[Journey with Jesus – Day 15]

This morning’s lesson comes from the Gospel of St Mark.

When Jesus hath landed saw he that a large crowd hath gathered.  He hath compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.  So he began to teach them many things.

Now was the day was far spent, so his disciples cometh to Jesus. “Verily, this is the middle of nowhere and it is getting very late,” spake they to him, “Tell the crowd to scarper, so they can grab some nosh from the nearby villages.”

But Jesus answered unto them, “Thou shouldst give them some nosh.”

They said unto him, “Art thou having a laugh? Surely thou art pulling our legs! Should we spend nearly all our hard earned cash to feed this lot?”

“How many loaves dost thou have?” he asked, “have a gander.”

“Oh, alright then,” saith they unto him and go away grumbling.  They had a look and cometh back unto the Lord, “Verily, wilt thou not like this – we have five loaves and two fish.  But that won’t get very far!”

But Jesus hath a plan.  He told them to make all the people sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. They all ate and were satisfied … except one or two …

Jesus wast sitting on the grass, satisfied with a job well done, when one of his disciples cometh unto him. “Err, Jesus, we have one or two requests.”

“Yes?”

“Umm, a few people asketh whether thou couldst miraculously feed them with gluten free bread, for verily does it make some of the people feel a little bit peculiar.”

“And one or two hath said that they don’t eat fish and wondered whether thou couldst produce a burger – but they don’t mind if there isn’t any ketchup.”

“And while thou art at it, hath we had requests for granary bread, and verily art there people who requesteth the vegetarian option – is there any Quorn?”

And Jesus stood up, and he was sore amazed.  “Who dost thou think I am? Some sort of catering company?”

Peter replieth unto him, “No, Jesus, we knowest that thou art the Christ and all that, but there are one or two who art a little peckish.  And Lord, knowest we that thou canst do all things.  Now, how about the burgers?”

Jesus shook his head in wonderment and said, “How long will I have to put up with you all? Thou art so picky!” But he hath compassion on them nevertheless – even on the picky ones – and so it was that everyone was satisfied.
